(Kalamazoo, Mich., July 8, 2024) — Alex Hokkanen, Project Coordinator, and J. Scott Winchester, Tribal Liaison/Senior Project Manager at Seven Generations A + E (7GAE), will present ‘Historic Preservation on the Oyate Health Center Campus: Rapid City Indian School and Sioux Sanatorium,’ hosted via Microsoft Teams on July 19, 2024, at 3pm EST (1pm MT).
7GAE began work to perform a series of historic preservation tasks per Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act related to constructing the new Oyate Health Center and the associated impact on the Sioux San Historic District. The campus, formerly known as the Sioux Sanatorium, Rapid City Indian School, and likely, many names in many languages that are unknown to us today. The Rapid City Indian School, a boarding school for Native youth, began operation in 1898 and closed in 1933. The Sioux Sanatorium, a tuberculosis hospital for Native patients, was constructed in 1938. This presentation will detail the work that went into the mitigation activities, what they were, the process, and, where available, the outcome. Some of the activities are still in progress.
The presentation will be held via Microsoft Teams. To join the event, interested individuals can visit: https://bit.ly/OHCHistoricPres. Attendees to the virtual presentation are asked to mute microphones upon entering the meeting. The presentation will be held at 3:00 p.m. EST (1 p.m. MT) on July 19th, 2024, followed by fifteen minutes of questions and discussion.
The 7GAE team is eager to showcase the work done in Rapid City regarding the historic preservation and renovation of the Oyate Health Center campus, previously known as Sioux Sanatorium.
