Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

WBK Engineering, LLC (WBK) completed Phase I and Phase II engineering services for the replacement of the Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge over Salt Creek. The existing bridge is a vital pedestrian and cycling link in the community and is frequently impassable during storm events. Reconstruction of a new, two-span truss bridge and multi-use path will maintain local community access across Salt Creek and accommodate connectivity to future regional bicycle routes.

This project earned the 2024 Project of the Year Award (Transportation, Less than $5M) granted by the Chicago Metro Chapter and Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA).

The proposed structure consists of a two-span (142’, 208’) prefabricated trusses measuring 15’-8” out-to-out trusses and 356’ back-to-back abutments. A 33’ overlook extends out on each side of the truss over the primary channel. A revised profile raises the bridge and pathway out of the floodplain to eliminate overtopping of the new structure.

WBK provided the following Phase I services:

• Prepared grant applications for federal funding
• Performed topographic surveys, wetland delineation, tree survey, and existing bridge inspection
• Special Waste Screening and Preliminary Environmental Site Assessment (PESA)
• Environmental Survey Request (ESR) and Wetland Impact Evaluation (WIE)
• Horizontal alignment and vertical profile design of the proposed bicycle path to meet IDOT, FHWA and ADA requirements
• Compensatory storage analysis
• Coordinated permitting with the US Army Corps of Engineers and Illinois Department of Natural Resources – Office of Water Resources
• Type, Size & Location (TS&L) Plans
• Preliminary Bridge Design and Hydraulic Report
• Project stakeholder, public utility, and public involvement coordination

Phase II engineering activities included:

• Supplemental Topographic Survey
• Utility, Permitting, and Environmental Coordination
• Final Plans, Specifications, and Cost Estimates for Pedestrian Bridge and Multi-Use Path
