WBK provided Phase I Preliminary Engineering and Phase II Final Engineering for a federally funded bike path and tunnel project in Geneva, Illinois. An alternative analysis was performed in Phase I to determine a structure type that would prove the most effective connection considering the crossing of heavily trafficked Randall Road.
Consulting with the County, contractors, and tunneling experts, a 12-foot internal diameter concrete jacking pipe tunnel was selected for design and construction. The concrete pipe tunnel was bored and jacked through the embankment of Randall Road south of Keslinger Road. The tunnel is 140 feet in length and includes concrete headwalls at both ends.
The project included design of the associated 10 foot wide hot-mix asphalt bike path on a new alignment, traffic signal modifications, guardrail, box culvert, tunnel lighting, and landscaping.
WBK performed the following Phase I and Phase II activities for this project:
• Performed topographic survey for engineering design
• Prepared Phase I Project Development Report and Preliminary Engineering Plans
• Prepared Phase II Final Engineering Plans including pipe tunnel with lighting and railings, reinforced concrete headwalls, concrete box culvert, HMA bike path, traffic signal modifications and site restoration
• Provided coordination with public utilities and the City of Geneva
• Prepared specifications and estimate of construction cost
